(4) Uthman bin Abu Shayba, Abu Ahmad, Yousuf bin Musa al-Qattan and Sufyan bin Wakeeâ narrated from Jareer from al-Ashâath bin Sawwar from Aamir ash-Shiâbi that his uncle Qayss bin Abd had said: âOne day a nomad came when Abdullah bin Massâood was among his companions. The nomad asked: âIs Abdullah bin Massâood among you?â Bin Massâood said: âHere I am.
What do you want?â The nomad said: âI want to ask you if you have heard the Prophet (S) talking about how many caliphs will be after him.â Bin Massâood said: âNo one asked me about this since I had come from Iraq. Yes, he (the Prophet (S)) said: âThe caliphs are twelve like the number of the chieftains of the Israelites.â
