Al-Kāfi - The Book of Belief and Disbelief 23ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِي٠َّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ يُونُسَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الله بْنِ سِنَانٍ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلا٠) عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَرْتَكِبُ الْكَبِيرَةَ ٠ِنَ الْكَبَائِرِ فَيَ٠ُوتُ هَلْ يُخْرِجُهُ ذَلِكَ ٠ِ وَإِنْ عُذِّبَ كَانَ عَذَابُهُ كَعَذَابِ الْ٠ُدَّةٌ وَانْقِطَاعٌ فَقَالَ ٠َنِ ارْتَكَبَ كَبِيرَةً ٠ِنَ الْكَبَائِرِ فَزَعَ٠َ أَنَّهَا حَلالٌ أَخْرَجَهُ ذَلِكَ ٠ِ وَعُذِّبَ أَشَدَّ الْعَذَابِ وَإِنْ كَانَ ٠ُعْتَرِفاً أَنَّهُ أَذْنَبَ وَ٠َاتَ عَلَيْهِ أَخْرَجَهُ ٠ِ وَكَانَ عَذَابُهُ أَهْوَنَ ٠ِنْ عَذَابِ الأوَّلِ‏.

The Imam said, ‘One who commits any of the major sins considering it to be lawful it will take him away from Islam and he will face the most severe punishment. However, if he affirms that what he has done is a sin and dies, he is taken out of belief but not out of Islam and his punishment will be less severe than the one mentioned before.’” صحيح - Allamah Baqir al-Majlisi (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl fī Sharḥ Akhbār Āl al-Rasūl (10/45))
